2026 Book to Action in Topeka, Kansas

After 12 years as co-chair, Gail Wechsler has retired, leaving behind a tremendous legacy, which includes Book to Action. Her work and dedication to the program to enlighten MAALL members through book discussions, as well as the Annual Meeting Communities through supporting local bookstores and charities, has created the gold standard in Law Librarians giving back to the community and each other.

Thank you, Gail!

2026 Book to Action Program

From your 2026 Book to Action coordinators, Matt Timko and Katie Escher

This year we will discuss the book Correction: Parole, Prison, and the Possibility of Change by Ben Austen.

Ben Austen’s powerful exploration offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process of parole. Told through the portraits of two men imprisoned for murder, and the parole board that holds their freedom in the balance, Austen’s unflinching storytelling forces us to reckon with some of the most profound questions underlying the country’s values around crime and punishment. What must someone who commits a terrible act do to get a second chance? What does incarceration seek to accomplish?

  • Join us on Friday, October 9 at 10:30am in Room 2 to discuss Correction.
  • You do not need to have read all or any of the book to participate.
  • The discussion will be led by Book to Action coordinators Katie Escher and Matt Timko.
This year the Charity will send books to the Juvenile & Adult Detention Centers in Topeka.
