MAALL Annual Meeting Travel Grants

The following $500 grants are to help defray the costs associated with the attendance of the MAALL Annual Meeting. Grants will be awarded based on the general MAALL travel grant criteria as well as the specific criteria for each grant.

Liz Glankler Travel Grant Criteria (2 available)

The Liz Glankler Travel Grant will be awarded to a MAALL member who is actively involved in the promotion, development, or application of technology in law librarianship. 

  1. A MAALL member in good standing;
  2. A member of a traditionally underrepresented group in the law librarianship profession;
  3. Not a current or immediate past officer of MAALL or of the Grants Committee.

Liz Glankler was an active member of MAALL from 2001-2012 and served the Association as webmaster, listserv manager, Chair of the Internet Committee, and as a member-at-large to the MAALL Executive Board.  In 2012, the MAALL Executive Board approved naming one of the travel grants in memory of Liz Glankler.

Jo Ann Humphreys Travel Grant Criteria (2 available)

The Jo Ann Humphreys Travel Grant will be awarded to an officer, committee chair, newsletter editor or webmaster to assist someone who is particularly active in MAALL and does not have enough institutional support to attend MAALL’s Annual Meeting.

Jo Ann Humphreys was an active member of MAALL from 1991-1996 and served as the MAALL Secretary for five years. In 1996, the MAALL Executive Board approved naming one of the travel grants in her honor.

Diversity and Inclusion Grant Criteria (2 available)

The Diversity and Inclusion Grant may be awarded to a member of MAALL to recognize their strong advocacy of diversity and inclusion, meaningful service to the larger legal community, and outstanding potential for continued service and advocacy within MAALL.

Applicants must be:

  1. A MAALL member in good standing;
  2. A member of a traditionally underrepresented group in the law librarianship profession;
  3. Not a current or immediate past officer of MAALL or of the Grants Committee.

Library Student Grant (1 available)

The Library Student Grant may be awarded to one member of MAALL each year to recognize and encourage a member in the early stages of their library education who demonstrates outstanding potential for continued service and leadership in MAALL and the profession.  

Applicants must be:

  1. A full-time student in an accredited library program or a part-time student employed by a law library in the first five years of their law library career;
  2. Not a previous recipient of a MAALL grant or award or of the PLLIP Emerging Leader Award, and;
  3. Not a current or immediate past officer of MAALL or of the Grants Committee.

General MAALL Travel Grants Criteria

In awarding travel grants, the Grants Committee will consider:

  1. Applicant’s membership in MAALL;
  2. Applicant’s contribution to MAALL;
  3. Usefulness of the meeting to the applicant;
  4. Special consideration may be given to newer law librarians to encourage them to establish relationships and get involved in MAALL;
  5. Previous award of travel grants, given that an individual may receive no more than one travel grant every three years.

Travel grants will be paid to the recipient at the annual meeting.  All travel grant recipients will be required to write an article for the MAALL Markings newsletter.

MALLCO Travel Grants

MALLCO is offering three $600 grants to cover costs to attend the 2023 MAALL Annual Meeting. Grant recipients will be expected to attend the MALLCO Roundtable and Paper Workshop sessions the morning of October 12, in addition to the rest of the conference. 

Application Process: 

The application is available HERE. Applications should be submitted by Friday, August 18, 2023. The Grants Committee will review applications and recipients will be notified by September 1, 2023. 

Eligibility:

Librarians and library staff, excluding law library directors, at all MALLCO libraries are eligible to apply for the grants. Grant recipients will be expected to attend the MALLCO Roundtable and Paper Workshop sessions the morning of October 12, in addition to the rest of the conference. 

2023 MAALL Travel Grants

We encourage all members of MAALL to apply for a MAALL travel grant to help defray the cost of travel to the annual meeting. This year we are pleased to be able to offer up to seven $500 grants.  Help us help you -- apply today! 

Listed below are several different travel grants to bring you Back for the Future in Des Moines.  The MAALL Grants Committee uses the same application, basic criteria, and procedures for all of the grants. Submit the grant application form by Friday, August 11. Recipients will be notified on or before Friday, August 25.
